Mystery Baby

We don't know much about our baby. We haven't had an ultrasound (because there is apparently no medical need for one in an uncomplicated pregnancy), so we don't know whether it is a boy or a girl. This makes it kind of hard to picture our life with this child.

I have always thought I would like a boy (they seems simpler), but Doug says he doesn't have a preference. Depending on when you ask, I am imagining the baby as one or the other. Originally I couldn't picture having a girl, so I always thought of the baby as a boy. Then we spent a lot of time considering girl names in the middle of the pregnancy, and that made it seem more real that it would be a girl. Now the midwife has told us that the baby is longer than average, which makes us think that it is a boy. It is very strange to think that it has been one or the other this whole time, and we just don't know which.

In many ways it would be nice to know more about this baby (he/she wouldn't have all green and yellow clothes, for one). Some people think we've really missed out on an amazing experience by not seeing the baby in an ultrasound. But, just like we're finding it helpful to tolerate amgibuity and focus on mystery in our spiritual lives, I'm glad we're preserving the mystery of the baby. Hopefully this will make the birth seem even more miraculous. We can't wait to meet this new member of our family!
