Ian's Travels

As I write this, Ian is sleeping, recovering from four days of traveling and excitement on Long Island. We flew to JFK Thursday night. We had a long wait in the airport, with a two hour delay due to storms in New York. Although we were flying way past his bedtime, Ian did very well, staying awake but happy for the whole flight (he finally fell fast asleep just as the pilot was thanking us for flying Jet Blue). He found many ways to entertain himself in the airport, and particularly liked pushing the wheeled suitcases around the terminal. He also managed to pull a whole glass of ice water over onto the table in the airport restaurant and kick the airplane tray table in such a way as to slide our in flight drinks off onto Doug's feet, but we survived.

Once we arrived in New York, there were many people to see and things to do:

Ian spent a lot of time outside walking around the driveway and exploring on Saturday during the neighborhood garage sale. He discovered quite a talent for finding tiny acorns, no matter how hidden they appeared to be. He also had his first real sports experience, appropriately taught by Pa (Grandpa McVey), the retired gym teacher. He learned to take the ball and put it into the "goal":

He also spent some time inside exploring the wonders of the kitchen drawers with Grammie:

And, of course, he spent lots of time playing with Aunt Julie:

He also met his canine cousins, Toby and Bella. He was absolutely delighted to see them, and followed them all around the backyard, but all parties were moving too quickly to get a good photo.

While we were with the family, we celebrated Ian's recent birthday, this time with presents. Once he figured out what to do, he found wrapping paper quite amusing:

He was interested in the new book Aunt Julie gave him:

And, of course, was relieved to have a new Yankees jersey to replace the ones that he has grown out of. Just because he was born in the South does not mean he's not a New Yorker!:

After a fun four days, we headed home today. This time we boarded the flight on time but waited on the plane for an extra hour (for a total of over 90 minutes "taxi-ing") due to storms in Raleigh. This scenario was my biggest worry about flying with a toddler, but he did very well and stayed in good spirits. We're glad to be home, but look forward to a visit from the McVeys in September.
