Ian has been going to gym class this year with Maeve and Lisa. This week his class came to an end, and this morning was his "performance" week. As you can imagine, performance is used very loosely with respect to 1.5-2.5 year olds, but it was a chance for me to go and see what skills he's been practicing. Much like his music class, there is a sense of group activity, but with a lot of wandering involved. Lisa tells me that Ian usually participates in the group, but today (perhaps because I was there), he was wildly excited about everything and ran around like a ninny (you'll notice the little squeak he lets out at the end of each activity in the videos). Lisa said that he was scared to try the equipment when class started, so he has gained a lot of confidence over the past several months. The series of videos below is a sampling of what Ian showed off at the gym:
A quick roll down the mat:
Doing a flip with a lot of help from Lisa:
Hanging and dropping off the bar (the plan was to walk sideways across to the other side, but he wasn't up for that -- lower degree of difficulty, but he stuck the landing!):
The beam may be his best event (too bad it's only for girls in official competition):
And biting the gold medal he got for the end of his class to prove its authenticity:
We're thinking that Ian's career as a gymnast will be rather limited by his height, but he seems to be having a good time for now : )
