We have been having struggles with sleep. Ever since the first break in his beautiful sleep-through-the-night habit lo those many months ago, we've been unable to get Ian to sleep through the night. Many nights he's up half a dozen times. Before we left for Long Island, we didn't have trouble getting to go to sleep in his crib in the evening, only after he woke up the first time. I had already given in and let him sleep in my bed rather than be tortured by endless cycles of rocking him to sleep only to have him scream as soon as he touched the crib. Since the trip to Long Island, it's been very difficult to get him to go to sleep in his crib at all. I have studied several sleep books, all adamantly saying different things (don't let him cry, let him cry for a little while, let him cry indefinitely, if you let him cry he'll be a sociopath, if you don't let him cry he'll be ruined for good, sleeping with you helps his emotional development, if you let him sleep with you he'll still be in your bed when he's 20, etc.). So I have been agonizing tiredly over this.
Then, last night, I got tired of singing to him after the 50th iteration of his sleep song, and turned on the classical radio station. Ahh. He seems fascinated, and it allowed me to put him down in his crib without him crying, giving him time to realize that he was actually very tired and drift off to sleep.
It worked even better tonight, giving me time to write this blog. (The Life of Ian blog, brought to you by The Classical Station).

Probably you will find experts who say that putting your child to sleep with classical music will result in the child becoming an underpaid musician/waiter and others who say that the child will automatically fall asleep whenever classical music comes on the radio while driving.
As always, I very much enjoy your dry wit, eb.
When I was a kid my mom made me promise up and down that I would only listen to classical music as a teenager. It didn't work. But I did listen to a lot of classical music early on, almost exclusively classical music, so I sure hope poor Ian doesn't turn out like me!
