- "When you and Daddy say 'T-O-M-T', those are things I can't know" (i.e. when we spell words it's to keep Ian from understanding)
- Doug: "Ian, you and I will go get dinner and go to the park so Mommy can stay home to rest and take a bath.". Ian: "No, I want Mommy to clean the house while we are gone."

Now that he has caught on that you spell things you don't want him to hear it won't be long before he figures out the words.
