(from late summer) Ian has been working on several new skills this summer. Swimming is the big one, and he can now swim on his own. The JCC where we go swimming has a red/yellow/green necklace system to denote swimming levels and pool access. All kids start with the red band and have to pass tests to get the others. Ian was VERY PROUD to pass the yellow band test in August (swimming half the length of the pool and treading water for 30 seconds). It is a huge status symbol in his social group, and allows him to go down the water slide (where he then has to swim to the stairs to exit).
The JCC pool is closed for the summer and if we do any swimming between now and May it will be much more limited. However, Ian is keeping busy working on his biking and skating skills. He's been out biking pretty often lately, using training wheels. On flat ground he does very well, but on hills he often needs a lot of pushes. The loop at our park next door requires a lot of adult intervention (not really any fun for the adult involved), but a short drive away there is a park with a nice big flat paved loop. Ian and Doug can both take their bikes there and ride together.
Ian has also been ice skating three times, and we're expecting this to become a more regular activity this winter. There's an indoor rink at the sportsplex 15 minutes from here. These videos are from his second skating experience back in July:
Swimming, biking, and skating are all activities that Ian enjoys and that require pretty constant and sometimes physically taxing adult involvement. We (and our backs) are looking forward to Ian continuing to strengthen his skills, dropping the training wheels and the skate assist, and being able to take off on his own in the next year!
