Ian had his last day with Lisa - a sad day, though we look forward to continuing to see her occasionally. We made a memory book of photos and Ian, Lisa, and Maeve (and her brother Vance) all have a copy. This was the cover photos:
Lisa is having a baby this fall, and Ian and Maeve have started preschool together at a great place down the street. We've been talking about school, and Ian was excited to go. As usual, he misses Mommy and Daddy when we go to work (as he tells us each morning), but he seems to have settled into school well and be enjoying his days. Here he is on the porch as we were about to leave for his first day of school:
People ask me what the difference is between "preschool" and "daycare" -- it may be just semantics, but I consider this preschool because it focuses much more on child development than on convenience for parents. The teachers are treated as professionals, with decent pay and benefits, and they read about child development and have favorite authors. I always want Ian's teachers to know more about child development than I do, but it's surprisingly hard to find places where this is the case. Ian's preschool is a very messy and creative place. He goes through multiple outfits each day, spends a lot of time outside, does a lot of "process" art, and learns a lot of self-help skills. Unlike at home, apparently at school he is willing and able to dress himself with minimal help. This results in him often coming home with his shirt and shorts on backwards, no socks, and shoes on the wrong feet! I tried to take a photo of this backwards outfit, but he wasn't very compliant. (He said "no take a picture Mommy - camera needs to charge!":
The future of Ian's schooling is still up in the air (and is likely to involve private school or a magnet school, as our home public district is atrociously bad), but it's great to know that we've got a place that we feel really good about for the next few years!
