I gave in . . .
Sigh. We finally started using a pacifier. I doesn't make me happy, but it seems to make Ian happier. The professional opinion now is it doesn't cause problems until they get teeth, and may be preferable to thumb-sucking. I don't know why I don't like it, but I'm adjusting. It was getting to the point where he either needed to nurse for hours on end in the evenings, or suck my finger. This seemed ridiculous, and as soon as we put the pacifier in his mouth, he took to it. He seems to like to suck a lot, so it keeps him satisfied. When he's tired, it helps him fall asleep, and when he's not, it helps him calm down enough to interact with the world.

I think maybe the key to parenting is being flexible? I can understand not liking sticking something plastic and artificial in his mouth intuitively. Yuck. But like you said, if it works and the research says it isn't detrimental to his well being, then well, hey... it works. I think you're doing great going with the flow! A happier EB will make for a happier Ian in the long run and sleep deprivation does no one any favors.
You have to give in to some things. Olivia takes her pacifier, but only at bed time, and some times not even then. For the first few months of life, pacifiers may actually prevent SIDS. So give your self a break -- we all need a few vices.
