Ian started smiling yesterday! This is very cool -- photos to follow as soon as he agrees to do it for the camera. He has been smiling and laughing in his sleep for that last few weeks, but now he's definitely doing it in response to what's going on around him.
We have a child development book that identifies several phases of babyhood. Ian is, of course, still a phase I baby. There are three markers that signal his movement into phase II. 1) Social smiling (check), 2) hand regard, and 3) substantial increase in wakefulness. Hand regard refers to an obsession with looking at his hands. No sign of this yet. We expect he'll become a phase II baby sometime in the next month . . .
