Carlebration

Doug and I identify strongly as NPR-listeners. Ian listens to NPR daily in the car with me, and we are sure that he appreciates it, too. He was fortunate this afternoon to have the chance to meet an NPR celebrity, Carl Kasell. Carl Kasell is the voice of the news on morning edition, and also an important part of one of our favorite NPR shows, Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me! (which we saw taped here in Chapel Hill on Thursday - I have not seen Doug that excited in a long time!). Our local public radio station, WUNC, has its offices a mile from our loft, in the American Tobacco district of Durham. Today they held an event known as Carlebration, Carlapalooza, or Carlmania. This was an outdoor party with live music, food, and a chance to meet Carl Kasell. For the kids, our local Scrap Exchange (which collects reams of interesting objects in barrels for reuse) was there. Ian got a few toddler-friendly items from the scrap exchange which entertained him quite well:

And then we got our chance to get a picture with Carl Kasell. You'll notice we are all glowing with sweat -- it was 100 degrees in Durham today:

After this excitement, Ian and I walked home through the heat only to find that I had left my keys in the car with Doug when he dropped us off. So we had a little adventure which concluded when I scaled the divider from our neighbor's yard into ours and came in through the back door. The rest of the day has been filled with more mundane activities, like Ian practicing his quickly improving walking skills!
