We went to NY with Uncle Greg and returned without him. This was not a surprise, it has always been the plan that he would return to NY. But is sad that Ian is losing his weekly Uncle Days, and sad for Greg that he left just as things with his nephew are getting fun! It is not every Uncle who is willing or able to plan six months of his life around spending time with his nephew, so we feel blessed that they had this concentrated time together. Since Uncle Greg is not prone to settle down into a tied-down life, we expect there may be other periods of special uncle/nephew times in the future. We look forward to having Greg back in town for a few weeks in August to finish plastering his house.
While he was here, Greg was a great help to me, in giving me some relief from the constant demands of baby motherhood on the days he was here. He also helped us a lot during the stressful time we were moving, by helping move and sort stuff, and also by providing child care so that we could both work at the house without distraction. Most importantly, Greg gave Ian one day a week of various wild and crazy Uncle activities, a break from his normal daycare routine on the weekdays and Mommy and Daddy routine on the weekends. They adventured together to stores, parks, and museums, and did lots of silly things at home. I often thought Greg understands the mindset of a child Ian's age much better than Doug or I do. Even though Ian will not remember this period in his life, I feel confident that Greg made his 4-11 month experience a richer one.
So farewell Uncle Greg, thanks, and we hope to see you soon!! (We do not miss finding clay, straw, and gravel in our dryer lint trap, but we do miss you!)
