On all his non-Uncle days, Uncle Greg has been in Carrboro building his cob house. It's come a long way in the last few weeks, and we wanted to go visit it before the opportunity to cob had passed. So Doug, Ian, and I went out yesterday to see the progress. We were impressed as this greeted us when we arrived:

Ian enjoyed exploring the naked cob walls with Uncle Greg:

He tested the capacity of one of the built-in bamboo shelves:

And inspected the straw bale cob that makes up the back wall:

Since we were there in mid-morning in the hot sun, Ian wore sunscreen for the first time (it had an interesting banana smell):

Of course, he wanted to try mixing some cob himself (this is typically done with one's bare feet). He was a little hesitant as he approached the cob, and tried to raise his feet high enough to avoid it:

Then he took the plunge and did some mixing:

But it didn't suit him, and he quickly protested . . . (However, Uncle Greg has assured Ian that the batch he was working on was incorporated into the wall later in the day, so Ian has made a contribution to the dwelling.) Ian found that he much preferred hanging out in the doorway to doing any actual work:

Doug, however, did help out with the first rafter experiments:

We all thought the house looked great, and are looking forward to seeing it in another week, when the green roof will be completed.
