One of the fun things Ian has started doing in the last few weeks is responding to tickling. Now we have a video so you can enjoy it too. In order to get a good response I also have to act silly. In this video I am the tickler and the camerawoman, which is a little tricky (in the process I apparently changed the video camera settings so I'm overdriving the audio - sorry).
Our favorite development book (by Burton White) has this interesting paragraph about tickling:
The fact that you cannot elicit a tickle response from a child before she is about fourteen weeks of age has always intrigued me. Perhaps it is related to the fact that adults cannot tickle themselves (Try it if you have never attempted it before. The effectiveness of the tickle is dependent on the "ticklee" perceiving that another person is producing the stimulation. You cannot tickle yourself because you know that you are not another person applying the stimulation. The child younger than about fourteen weeks of ags is not well developed enough socially to have reached whatever awareness of another person is necessary to make the tickle functional.

Are you tickling or torturing him and how would you know when the poor kid can't even say stop?
In all seriousness, he seems to be such a happy baby. Pure joy. What bliss.
