The Inexplicable Teapot

After a good but long and complicated two weeks of travel, Ian and I are back home in Raleigh (toting Uncle Greg). On this trip we stopped in Arlington, Reston, Binghamton, Syracuse, Binghamton, and Baltimore. We got to see lots of people and Ian was well entertained. It meant a lot of time in the car, though, with the longest trip coming yesterday, from Baltimore to Raleigh. Most of the trip Ian was very easy, and slept a lot. A few times he went through fussy periods (he doesn't really like to be in his carseat when he's awake). Greg and I had discovered a few nights before, when a hungry Ian screamed most of the way back from dinner, that there is a secret way to keep him happy in the car. It's the teapot.

I noticed in Syracuse that Ian seemed to prefer "I'm a little teapot" to all the other songs that we sung with him. When he got unhappy in the car, singing seemed like a good way to entertain him, since we couldn't take him out of his seat. So we sang "I'm a little teapot". LOTS. Mostly, Greg and I sang it in a round. Occasionally we tried other harmonies and styles, but Ian usually objected to these. We sang until our throats hurt. If I tried switching to another song with a similar melody (like "Row, row, row your boat"), Ian immediately started complaining. What is so special about the teapot??

Oh to be a fly on the windshield on this car trip. I would probably be into the rounds, but not into the harmonies.

I'm with ya Ian.

How about a CD with I'm a little teapot that you could put on repeat on the car rides?
