Living through History

I have always wondered if it was clear to people who lived through historically significant events that history was being made at the time. I feel very sure that we are experiencing such a time now. Barack Obama has just been voted the first black president of the United States. He is young and inspiring and different from any president we've had in my lifetime. The country is going through a crisis -- most acutely economically, but also in other ways. We have gone very quickly from apathy to complete engagement with the political process (thank you, President Bush, for inspiring us). People have been desperate for something different, and we now believe we have it. So, Ian, you are living through history. You went and voted with me and participated in making it happen (although, as of this writing, NC is still too close to call for president).

This is the kind of moment for which everyone says that you will remember where you were. Since you are too young to remember, I took this picture to show you. You were awake when the election was called for Obama (in our case, by Jon Stewart), but were overwhelmed by the experience shortly afterward:

I hope that history will view this moment as a turning point, and that your life and your country will be better as a result of this election.

The fact that I can see how much he has grown since you have been gone disturbs me. He will soon be too big for me to steal... aww.

But, he is witness to a great day in history.
