Phases

Ian has had two distinct phases this week. The first, which lasted for three days, involved him sleeping for 8 hours straight each night. Yay! Sadly, this did not last. The second phase I will call the "thrashing" phase. For the past several days, Ian has been wriggling and thrashing around a lot, whether he is content or upset. He does this while he is nursing (ouch), periodically while he is sleeping, and much of the rest of the time as well. Along with this, he has been waking up during the night again to nurse. After eating, instead of falling back to sleep as he typically does, he has been in a happy active mood (as long as I continue holding him), ready to hang out and say "goo" with me. This is fun, but would be more fun during the day. No doubt these phases have some purpose in Ian's development, but they are a mystery to me!

I'll never forget that first post where you commented that you could see that a lot of the challenges of parenting come from the unpredictability of the ever-changing child. Sounds a bit rough, but your perspective that it is all for good cause is healthy. Hoping that phase one prevails and predominates this week!
